After playing in numerous local bands, Chicago singer-songwriter Phil Rockrohr set out on his own in 1999.

From the remnants of those projects, Rockrohr assembled a backing band for the 5-song EP "Popcycle," a CD named in the Top 5 of 1999 for Chicago music by Richard Milne, host of "Local Anesthetic" on WXRT-FM.

That band became The Lifters, Rockrohr's backing band for the next four years. By 2003, the original Lifters were replaced and Rockrohr recorded "Buxom" with new drummer Tim Rutkowski and other local musicians.

Chicago Tribune rock critic Greg Kot called that CD, released in 2005, a "cool little 5-song EP of straight-ahead rock 'n' roll" and placed Rockrohr among Chicago artists that "should be national level acts."

Rockrohr recorded his first solo CD, "Thru the Haze," with Dave Johnson (Favorite Saints, Very Secretary), now guitarist for The Lifters. "Thru the Haze" was released in late 2006 on the indie cooperative PopUlysses.

Tracks from "Thru the Haze" are available for listening on myspace, along with "Washington Bullets," recorded with the original Lifter rhythm section for a Clash tribute album due out in March 2007.
